ABB has launched the BIOTEMP-filled power and distribution eco-friendly transformers for the Australia market.
BIOTEMP is a natural ester-based fluid made from renewable vegetable-based oil, said to provide environmental benefits, improved transformer performance and fire resistant properties compared to traditional mineral oil dielectric fluids.
ABB’s proprietary dielectric BIOTEMP solution increases transformer overload capability without compromising insulation lifespan under normal loading conditions.
BIOTEMP fluid has a firepoint of over 300°C, and is listed as a “less flammable” dielectric fluid by FM Global and classified as a “less hazardous” dielectric medium in respect to fire hazard by Underwriters Laboratories.
Typically BIOTEMP filled transformers can be used for environmentally sensitive locations, indoor substations and in tighter spaces outdoors without additional fire safety requirements.
According to ABB, the BIOTEMP release is the start of the “green transformer” program in Australia, which seeks to reduce energy losses, improve energy efficiency, minimise environmental impact and increase overload-ability.
