THE LATEST graduate employment report from GradStats shows Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineers have the highest employment rate of all engineering graduates.
While engineering graduates overall take a bit longer to find work after their tertiary graduation, the 2015 GradStats report found that over 78 percent of electrical, electronic and computer engineering graduates seeking employment had full time employment four months after graduating.
Overall, the 2015 figures showed a slight improvement in the short-term employment prospects of new graduates, compared to 2014. 68.8 percent f Bachelor degree graduates were in full-time employment within four months of completing their degrees, up to 68.1 percent in 2014, though down from 71.3 percent in 2013.
The middle and longer term outlook for graduates remains positive. A follow up study shows that three years after graduating, 89.2 percent of graduates are in full time employment.
Comparatively, Bachelor degree graduates in the wider Australian workforce (aged 15-74) tend to have a lower unemployment rate, at just 3.4 percent compared with an overall rate of 5.9 per cent and 8.7 per cent for those with no post-school qualifications.
Graduates with a combined or double degree had better employment figures (74.0 per cent in full-time employment) than those with a single degree (68.1 per cent).
Respondents living in regional areas were also more likely to be in full-time employment than their counterparts in a capital city (72.0 per cent compared with 67.8 per cent).
