Arduino Leonardo now available

THE latest Arduino, the Leonardo, has arrived, with the new R3 standard pin layout and a simplified, single processor.

With the R3 layout becoming standard, shield makers only have to design and manufacture their add-on products once to ensure Arduino compatibility across the board.

A new IOREF pin can be used to determine the voltage of the processor, in addition to a number of other extra pins that provide more functionality and flexibility.

While previous boards had two processors (one taking care of USB communication, the other being the main processor), the Arduino Leonardo has a single processor which does double duty, simplifying the design.

The Leonardo has 12 analogue inputs, and can be detected by PCs as a mouse or a memory drive. It can be used a as a base to build assistive devices which replace mouse and keyboards, as well as gaming control and devices which allow automatic data entry.

The Leonardo comes in two versions: with headers, and headerless.
