Slow start for semiconductor sales in 2016

THE SEMICONDUCTOR Industry Association (SIA) says global semiconductor sales have slowed during the first few months of 2016.

SIA reported worldwide sales of semiconductors reached US$26.9 billion in January 2016, which is 2.7 percent lower than December 2015, which recorded a total of US$27.6 billion, and 5.8 percent lower than January 2015, which totalled US$28.5 billion.

Sales of semiconductors into the Americas were particularly sluggish, with a decrease of 5.9 percent month-to-month and 16.9 percent year-to-year.

According to John Neuffer, president and CEO of SIA, softening demand and lingering macroeconomic issues meant global semiconductor sales decreased in January across most regional markets.

“Despite these challenges, modest market growth is projected for 2016, following essentially flat sales last year,” he said.

Globally, only China bucked the trend: while sales for January 2016 decreased 0.4 percent month-to-month, they were up 4.3 percent when compared to January 2015.

Microprocessors also defied the downward trend, being the only major semiconductor product category to record a year-to-year increase of 2.1 percent in global sales.
