Former electrical company boss fined $8 K for underpaying worker

The former
owner and operator of an electrical manufacturer has been fined nearly $8,000
for exploiting a migrant worker.

According
to a statement on the Fair Work Ombudsman’s website, Moussa Ghorbani-Palangi, the former
owner of Bayswater’s MGP Electrical, admitted to underpaying a process worker by $22,473.

The worker was from Thailand and was then
on a bridging visa. He has since become an Australian citizen.

Fair Work found ordered Ghorbani-Palangi
pay a penalty of $7,854, and give an undertaking to pay the remaining
difference.

Judge Frank Turner labelled the owner’s
conduct as, “at best negligent”.

MGP ceased trading in 2013.
