TI to make multi-mode compatible wireless power ICs

TEXAS Instruments is aiming to boost wireless power adoption by developing multi-mode wireless power integrated circuits (ICs) aimed at smartphones and portable electronics.

The newly announced products will support both the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC)’s Qi standard, and the Power Matters Alliance (PMA) wireless charging specification.

This expanded development is in addition to TI’s continuing work in developing new bqTESLA wireless power receiver and transmitter integrated circuits that comply with existing and future versions of the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) Qi standard.

The first multi-mode solutions are expected later this year.

According to TI, by making phones compatible with multiple wireless power standards, it hopes to boost adoption of the technology.

TI also recently announced it will develop products that support the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) magnetic resonance specification. A4WP is a group of electronics companies, including Samsung, Qualcomm and others, focused on advancing spatial freedom in wireless power.
