Second wave energy converter installed in one day

Latest News

CARNEGIE Wave Energy says it has installed a second CETO 5 wave energy generator unit, and it is now operational.

The company is currently testing its CETO 5 wave energy generators at Perth, with the first installed unit having clocked up over 1700 operational hours already since November 2014. The second unit was installed over the course of one day, and has been operating for over a week.

Carnegie Wave Energy said the unit experienced waves up to 3.5m in height, and is operating in line with expectations alongside the first CETO 5 unit.

The power from the units are being fed to a load bank onshore, with the project waiting for final approvial from Western Power to start putting power into the grid. Ultimately, the generated power will be supplied to the Defence Department.

According to Carnegie, the second unit demonstrated that the technology can be deployed in just one day. Additionally, it showed that multiple wave energy converters can be integrated – with future scaling to become the basis of CETO “wave farms”.

The next step will be to start feeding electricity generated from the waves into the grid, as well as to install a third test unit. This third CETO 5 unit is currently being fitted out for installation. This third unit will be used to demonstrate operation and maintenance methodologies and may be held onshore for longer than 30 days to minimise installation and retrieval costs should Unit 1 continue to operate without needing to be retrieved.
