THE RASPBERRY Pi 2 has been announced, with
a more powerful processor and twice as much RAM as the original, while keeping
the original price point.
The original Raspberry Pi was released in
2012, a tiny working computer intended to act as a base for electronics
projects, and to educate students and enthusiasts about programming and
electronics.
According to Mike Powell, technology
development manager at element14, the Raspberry Pi 2 represents a major leap
forward in terms of computing power, and will open up a new wave of application
possibilities.
The Pi 2 is equipped with a quad-core ARMv7
processor running at 900MHz, which can be overclocked, as well as 1GB of RAM.
It supports up to 4 USB connections, while storage is now via a Micro SD card
While the Raspberry Pi has been most
enthusiastically taken up by makers and hackers, the increase in performance
and the maintenance of its price point also makes the Raspberry Pi very
appealing to schools and educational establishments — especially with the
bundled educational tools and software.
Additionally, Microsoft will be delivering
a version of its next generation Windows 10 operating system that can run on
the Raspberry Pi 2. This version of Windows 10 will be available for free
through the Windows Developer Program for IoT later in 2014.
According to the Raspberry Pi Foundation,
the new unit is mostly backward compatible with the original, although some
cases might need to be modified for fit.
The Pi 2 is now available through element14
and other distributors.
