AN Australian startup is crowd-funding a multifunctional motherboard for the Intel Edison, bridging the gap between Raspberry Pi and the Edison.
According to Tektyte, the Edi-Expand caters to developers who are familiar with the Raspberry Pi, but who would like to experiment with an Intel Edison.
The Intel Edison mounts to the centre of the Edi-Expand motherboard, which then provides an Ethernet jack, four USB ports, MicroSD card slot, 5V DC power supply port, switchable programming port, dedicated console port, and a Raspberry Pi compatible IO header.
These features give developers on the Intel Edison the same access to the USB connectivity and IO header of the Raspberry Pi.
The Edi-Expand also provides the ability to access the Internet via Wi-Fi. The four USB ports can be used to drive alphanumeric LED displays, which Tektyte calls “IoT Counters”.
According to Tektyte, the single-line counter displays are useful for applications where the information needing to be displayed is in the form of simple text or numbers, and where a screen would be over-kill or too distracting.
The IoT Counters are bright, takes power and data via USB and are supported by Python and Arduino libraries.
