More flexible specification for wireless charging

THE Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) has approved a wireless power specification which will allow multiple devices with different power requirements to be simultaneously charged.

According to A4WP, the more flexible wireless power specification “sets the stage for formal standardisation in the future”.

It is hoped that wireless power, based on this future standard, will eventually become commercially available for consumers, who will benefit from cordless charging of devices like smartphones and tablets.

The A4WP specification leverages a loosely coupled magnetic resonance technology and provides more flexibility for charging applications to be installed into automobiles, furniture and other surfaces.

This new specification allows multiple devices to be charged at the same time, on the same surface. For consumer electronics, the specification utilises current wireless technologies, such as Bluetooth 4.0, which will allow manufacturers to minimise hardware requirements.
