IBM will invest $3 billion over four years to create a new business unit dedicated to Internet of Things systems.
The new IBM business unit will look to provide IoT solutions to enterprises in the travel, logistics, insurance, public utilities, transportation and retail, industries.
Enterprises will be able to use IBM’s new IoT Cloud Open Platform to build their own data-driven systems, with IBM promising to develop specialised packages for specific fields.
Enterprise developers will get access to a customised section of IBM’s Bluemix platform service, where they can create business logic to handle and analyse data streaming from IoT devices and sensors.
IBM has already signed deals with industry partners such as AT&T, ARM and Semtech to work more closely with them in developing IoT related hardware and data.
Cummins, an engine manufacturer is already using IBM technology to collect real time performance data on its products. SilverHook Powerboats also uses these services to analyse telemetry data.
Most B2B IoT work will require network-connected remote instrumentation and analytics systems, says IBM.
