ELEMENT14 has launched a “Sci Fi Your Pi”, challenging engineers and enthusiasts to design applications from science fiction using the Raspberry Pi 2.
Idea submissions to the design challenge are open through 12 April 2015. The judges are looking for extraordinary and innovative applications that take their inspiration from the world of science fiction, including movies, novels or comic books.
The challenge cites examples such as an intelligent motion tracker to hunt down aliens or ghosts (inspired by the Alien franchise and the PKE Metre from Ghost Busters), an auto-lockdown gated system to secure dinosaurs (inspired by Jurassic Park), or an automated quadcopter to scan desolate areas.
Once the initial stage of the challenge closes on 12 April, 20 finalists will be chosen, and will receive a Raspberry Pi 2 with a complete suite of accessories to execute their projects. They will also be given a free license for CadSoft EAGLE, the market-leading PCB design software. They will then blog about their ideas, designs and progress as they implement their ideas from May to September 2015.
One ultimate winner, who will be announced in September, will win sci fi memorabilia worth $500, including an actual Boba Fett bounty hunter helmet used in the Star Wars film production. The winner will be chosen by a panel of expert judges including James Adams, director of hardware engineering at Pi Trading. A Community Choice winner will also be selected through a vote on the element14 Community and will receive an introductory robotics set.
