Once the leader in its field, the Blackberry smartphone will no longer be manufactured in Canada as it succumbs to the inevitable take over of more popular touchscreen handsets produced by Apple, Samsung and Nokia.
Fourteen years ago, Blackberry mobile phones were the leaders in the world of handsets, with its distinctive Qwerty keyboard being its most popular feature.
Since then, Apple has released a series of iPhones, Samsung its Galaxy series and Nokia its Lumias. In all that time, despite many attempts, Blackberry has not been able to make significant inroads into the touch screen market, losing a tonne of marketshare along the way.
The company itself will not go away, as it will now concentrate on software development, such as apps and phone security.
BlackBerry has struck a licensing agreement with a company in Indonesia to make and distribute branded devices. Chinese and Indian manufacturers could be signing similar deals in the near future, too.
