SEMICONDUCTOR industry sources say microcontroller manufacturer Atmel is looking to get acquired.
According to the sources, California-based Atmel is working with an investment bank to work out a possible sales process.
This news comes after a raft of other consolidation news in the electronics industry in recent months, most notably with Avago Technologies purchasing Broadcom, and Intel buying Altera.
Atmel’s technology is used in Internet of Things devices and wearable products. Its solutions may be useful for semiconductor companies that want to bundle their own analogue components with Atmel’s microcontrollers.
In 2008, ON Semiconductor and Microchip Technology made a hostile bid for Atmel, but eventually withdrew.
