SanDisk has unveiled a prototype SD card that has a memory of 1TB. No, this is not a typo, and although the device is not available yet, that it is at prototype stage means a commercial release can’t be too far away.
SanDisk parent company Western Digital says it was 16 years ago when the first 64 megabyte SD card was released, while it was only a mere two years ago it released a 512GB card.
The new card will be aimed at the film market with 4k, 8k, 360-degree video and VR needing a super-portable format to store information.
The downside? Initially it won’t be cheap and the read and write speeds will be slow. However, these issues will no doubt be addressed in further iterations.
